Jan. 26, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Navy rifle team scored season highs in both disciplines, cruising past the University of the Sciences on Saturday morning, 4651-4262. The win improved Navy to 7-1 overall.

"I'm really pleased with our performance this weekend," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We shot very well all three days. Our performances this weekend should be able to push us into a top-eight spot for the NCAA Championships, provided we continue to shoot well and improve."

Navy fired a 2309 in smallbore, topping its previous season high by seven points (2302 vs. Alaska on Friday). Josh Albright (Sr./Shelton, Conn.) had a strong day, garnering medalist honors with a 585. Chris Burleston (Fr./St. Augustine, Fla.) added a career-best 580. Alison Lankes (Fr./Clarence, N.Y.) totaled a 576 and Monica Amagna (Sr./Tulsa, Okla.) scored a 568.

"I am really pleased with our freshman, Chris Burleson and Alison Lankes. They have continued to improve and are really improving," said Kelley. "Josh Albright's score (585) today is very good tally as well."

Navy then turned around and bested its previous season high in air rifle (2335 vs. MIT on Oct. 27) with a strong 2342 against USP. Lisa Kunzelman (Jr./Constantia, N.Y.) garnered medalist honors with a 590. Alex Karacsonyi (Jr./North Haven, Conn.) tallied a 589. Albright followed with a 585 and Christina Schade (Sr./Eagle River, Alaska) rounded out the scoring with a 578.

Navy's next action comes in the annual Star Meet against Army on Feb. 9. The Mids are looking to snap a two-match losing streak against the Black Knights. Competition will get underway at 9:00 am at the Bancroft Rifle Range in Annapolis.
